360° Virtual Tour

Available for only the third time in 152 years, the wisteria-adorned Eliza Stebbins House (c.1870) is like no other in Somerville. Set on a large lot, steps from the center of Davis Square, this historic Mansard home and gardens have been painstakingly restored and lovingly updated.

The historically-designated Eliza Stebbins House (circa 1870), it is one of few remaining “well-conserved examples” of a Second Empire Cottage in Davis Square, which took off as a commercial hub of activity when the rail and streetcar services started in the 1870s. The two-story home has a slate Mansard roof and covered front porch with classic Second Empire double entry doors with transom windows. The Historic Survey reads, “Architectural details that remain include paired brackets, projecting window lintels, the pedimented dormers, and the projecting open entrance porch with arched brackets and a double entrance door” which has been framed beautifully by aged purple wisteria.

Originally part of the Rev. Ralph Day Estate, this lot was eventually subdivided in the 1870s. The home was eventually owned by Eliza Livermore Stebbins whose husband Rufus Phineas Stebbins was once the pastor at the Newton Centre Unitarian Church. Their son, Nathaniel Livermore Stebbins, who later owned the house, was a world-renowned American marine photographer; his work of a variety of maritime images could be seen in eminent magazines of the day and some can be seen today at the Peabody Museum in Salem MA.

Thirty Day St. has been owned by only 3 families since it was built. After the Stebbins family, the Fontaine family owned the home for two generations. The current owners, the Binghams, purchased the home in 2010 and did considerable renovation and restoration. Inspired by the Painted Ladies of San Francisco, the exterior of the home was painted to showcase the detailed and decorative woodwork.

Once inside, the home’s foyer welcomes you with high ceilings, dramatic staircases leading to the second floor and basement, wide-pine floors, and beautiful reproduction lighting. The first floor boasts high ceilings, crown moldings, and ceiling medallions. To the left is the dining room with ornate textured wallpaper, decorative marble fireplace, reproduction lighting, and wood floors and to the right is the living room with a gas fireplace. Beyond the dining room is the kitchen with white shaker cabinets, wide pine floors, built-in china cabinet with backlighting, dining area, stainless steel appliances including Adventium double ovens (one is a convection/microwave), a 5-burner gas cooktop and vent hood, stone countertops and backsplash, pendant, recessed, and undercabinet lighting, cookbook display, and French doors with transom window leading to the wrap-around back deck. At the rear of the home is a conservatory with a stone tiled floor, ceiling fan, 2 sets of double French doors with transom windows that open to the large wrap-around deck. Rear entry hallway/mudroom features stone tiled floor, built-in bench and coat hooks, a half-bath, laundry, and back stairway to the second floor. Nearby is a large room with a ensuite bathroom, which includes a curbless walk-in-shower, and large closet storage; it could be used as a primary bedroom suite, office, or family room.

The spacious second floor features 4 additional bedrooms, including one with an ensuite bathroom with  air-jetted bathtub, and another full bath in the hall.

A private entrance off the right side yard leads to a lower-level sleek accessory apartment with 1 bedroom, kitchen, living area, laundry, closets, and storage. The owners constructed the accessory apartment in a manner that allows it to be easily reincorporated into the main house or expanded into the unfinished storage area to create a second bedroom.

Designed for year-round enjoyment, the well-detailed landscaping includes a custom, black, wrought iron fence along the street, a wood-fenced and gated backyard with south and west exposure, and a dramatic, wrap-around deck perfect for lounging and eating. The flat yard has vegetable and fruit beds, rose bushes, annuals, and perennials. Several trees including yews, river birch, and three apple trees. Several barrels collect rainwater for environmentally-friendly irrigation. There is ample parking in the paved, gated driveway for at least 6 cars.
